Information for thematic submissions!

This year is the 48th anniversary of the first woman-authored CRM report filed in South Carolina, written by Susan Jackson at the South Carolina Institute of Archaeology & Anthropology in 1976. In the years since that first report, women have contributed greatly to archaeology in South Carolina through articles, conference presentations, student mentorship, the Archaeological Society of South Carolina, and many other ways. Our society membership, along with our board, have shown strong membership rates and engagement from women who are passionate about South Carolina archaeology. Preprofessional training programs in South Carolina, led by preeminent, award-wining women in our field, have produced increasing rates of exceptional women archaeologists, who are part of the growing majority of early- and mid-stage professional women working in archaeology across the Southeast.

To honor the legacies and contributions of the many incredible, “trowel”-blazing women who have shaped South Carolina archaeology over its long history, we cordially invite general and thematic submissions for the 2023 ASSC Annual Conference focus: Women in South Carolina Archaeology. We want to especially welcome presentations that feature retrospectives and reflections on the past and present role or experiences of women in archaeology; syntheses of notable field, lab, and research projects in South Carolina that highlight the contributions of women archaeologists; current research involving the exploration of gender, sex, the intersection of gender and race, and/or sexuality in the archaeological record of South Carolina sites and/or researchers; and memorials of pioneering women in South Carolina archaeology who are no longer with us. We welcome submissions involving a range of formats, including paper presentations, posters, videos, talkbacks, or other suggested alternatives that would fit within our program. Please note that thematic contributions will be prioritized for inclusion in a special issue of South Carolina Antiquities

Abstracts for presentations should be a maximum of 150 words and indicate the intended format for the contribution (paper, poster, panel, video, etc.). Panels and talkbacks should also include a list of prospective participants. Abstracts must be submitted to the ASSC email address (archaeologysocietysc@gmail.com) no later than Friday, January 20th.
